What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal government health insurance program, started in 1966, for:

  • People who are 65 or older

  • Certain people under 65 with certain disabilities

  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, known as ESRD)

There are four parts to Medicare: A, B, C, and D:

  • Original Medicare includes Medicare Parts A & B

  • If you want drug coverage, you can join a separate Medicare Part D Plan

  • To help pay your out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare (such as your 20% coinsurance), you can shop for an purchase a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan. For more information click here

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Helps Cover:

  • Inpatient care in hospitals

  • Skilled nursing facility care

  • Hospice care

  • Home health care

Medicare Part C

  • Also known as Medicare Advantage

  • Combines Medicare Parts A, B, and D

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Helps Cover:

  • Services from doctors and other health care providers

  • Outpatient care

  • Home health care

  • Durable medical equipment (such as wheelchairs, walkers, and hospital beds)

  • Many preventive services (such as screenings, shots, and yearly "Wellness" visits)
